Nowadays, vast researches are conducted on energy issues and in particular in energy efficiency and conservation. Therefore, engineers have developed techniques and applications to enable efficient energy use. One of these interesting applications is "Smart Meters". Smart energy meters provide a suitable tool to acquire, monitor and bi-directionally communicate electric power consumption details between consumption point and the control and data collection point.

 

Added to that, smart meters are very fundamental element in the advanced metering infrastructure of smart grids. Moreover, smart meters are the upgraded version of electromechanical energy meters as smartness is added to their functionalities. Smartness or intelligence of the smart meters is in their ability to do energy metering, energy measurement analysis and to take actions accordingly.

 

The main objective of the project is to design an open-source and modular smart meter prototype for educational and research purposes. However, the ultimate desired aim is to be able to use open-source modular smart meters to build and develop AMI in Qatar University.
